The Benefits of Yoga

The practice of yoga has stood the test of time and is today flourishing because its benefits include a healthy body, a calm and focused mind and an overall sense of well-being.

Yoga begins with awareness of the breath, making it steady and fully conscious. With such awareness of breathing one automatically becomes more aware of the sensations of the body. This focus on feeling, rather than thinking, gives the mind an opportunity to rest from its normally incessant chatter.

One begins to create space: in the lungs through the breathing and in the muscles through the action of the postures, and indeed in the cells of every part of the body and even the mind. And in that space one can find stillness and peace.

It does not matter if one cannot touch one's toes, or whether one can already stand on one's hands, yoga is about working within one's own capability. Judgement, of oneself and others, can be suspended, along with any sense of competition, analysis or criticism. One can simply tune in to the experience of being oneself in a totally healthy and unselfish way.

Yoga is the best possible health insurance for the body, mind and soul!
